Columbine High School Massacre

Another example of Moral Panic is when after the Columbine High School Massacre in 1999, two students embarked on a massacre, that ended in the death of 12 students and one teacher.  The majority of the media directed the blame at shock rock artist Marilyn Manson. Since I myself am a huge fan of Marilyn Manson’s music I find this accusation absurd! I think people were desperately trying to blame popular culture for the tragedy that happened. They could not come to terms with the fact that it was just two, particularly troubled, perhaps even psychotic, boys who caused the mass devastation.
Sensationalist headlines such as ‘Devil-Worshipping Maniac Told Kids to kill‘ were published and many  now believe, because of what these articles, that Marilyn Manson’s music is solely to blame. The accusations meant that Marilyn Manson had to cancel the remaining North American dates of their Rock is Dead tour out of respect for the victims, shortly after Marilyn Manson wrote and article for the Rolling Stone magazine defending his music and popular culture. After all the hype however was revealed in later reports that the two gunmen were not even fans of Marilyn Manson’s music.
